My Opinion:

This Bible really appealed to my son who is 5 and has been longing for “big Bible” of his own for awhile now.  It’s got the boyish cover that looks like metal and will appeal to most boys and their sense of rough, tumble and making things.  My son isn’t yet reading, which is probably good, or we’d all be privy to all the gross and gory stuff in the Bible from him reading us the sections of “Grossology-Gross”.  My oldest, who is my daughter, thought it was maybe too graphic, such as the following:

“The price David had to pay to marry Saul’s daughter?  A hundred Philistine foreskins.  David doubled it by killing 200 Philistines (I Samuel 18:27).  Imagine carrying 200 slices of fresh bloody delicate man skin back to the king. 2 Samuel 3:14”

While I do appreciate that the Bible is sometimes violent and bloody, I’m not sure if I like the fact of calling certain areas to the forefront and making it front and center.  Yes, some boys like gross stuff, like worms, but I’m not sure if I like the idea of having my son recalling certain facts that are gross or beyond gross in my opinion.  Not all of the grossology though are as detailed as the one above and the Scripture to memorize and how certain verses relate back to a boy’s life today are certainly good things about this Bible and as my son learns to read, I’ll be sure that we keep lines of communication open as we discuss certain things that do occur in God’s Word.
