About the series:

Nicole O’Dell helps address the Hot Buttons in teens’ lives before the issues become problems

From dating to drugs, modesty to purity, morals to popularity, teens face all sorts of tough issues. How teens respond to these hot-button issues can have lasting effects on who they want to be and who they actually become. What if parents can help their teens prepare for these hot buttons-before the issues become a problem?

The uniquely packaged Hot Buttons Series is an accessible, quick-reference resource that parents can use to equip their children to make the right decisions, even in the face of peer pressure and outside influences. More than just another how-to manual, Hot Button Dating Edition offers practical real-life situations that parents can read and discuss with their preteens. Topics include: physical activity, missionary dating, and violence/abuse in dating relationships.

Author, mom, and broadcaster, Nicole O’Dell provides short scenarios followed by three or four responses that a teen might choose in that particular situation. Parents are then encouraged to help their children explore the issue, ask questions, and discuss the options, so when a similar situation comes up in real life, the teens are already prepared to respond.

My Opinion:

My first thoughts were these books have what parents need to know in regards of information about the dangers of the internet, drugs, dating and sexuality – I guess too what was more shocking to me was that some parents are ignorant of some of these things in these books.  Maybe because I had my children younger and I’m not as far removed from my teens and early 20’s as some parents – I’ve been involved in technology for years, and I’m ashamed to say the sex and drug, so that may play a role in me being being aware of what’s in these books.

These books are fast reads and are a good resource to use if you’re not sure about something in your child’s life or how to approach a subject.  I would have liked the author to include a section on courtship for the dating edition – as it focused solely on dating (in my opinion that isn’t good for a Christian to pursue) and giving parents an options would be helpful.  There are strategic scenarios which the parent reads a scenario such as “You’re at a party and some  girls start taking their shirts off for money.  Your friends get involved and even give money to the girls.  What do you do?”  (Sexuality Edition, page 138) then you give them choices and you discuss their choice, why it’s wrong or right along with other thought provoking questions.

While I think these are good books to have on hand, as with everything, make sure to filter it through Scripture, such as the birth control chapter.  Yes, it’s true some Christians feel it’s okay for it to be used within a marriage but is it Scriptural to do so – especially once you find out how it works?  It’s all about reading the book and using what you can – not every Christian is going to agree with everything in these books but it’s a jumping point to give parents someplace to start and of course, things need to be handled differently depending on how the child is being raised – some public schoolers are going to be exposed to a lot of these early on like Kindergarten while home school children are going to be able to retain their innocence longer without a need for the strategic scenarios.

**Disclaimer:  I was given the set of four books from Litfuse Publicity in exchange for my honest opinion, no other compensation was given.
