Litfuse Publicity: A Big Year for Lily (Book 3) by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher #review

on July 17, 2013

About the Book: Lily Lapp’s family has settled into their new home in Pennsylvania, but life still holds big changes and big steps for Lily. Good changes, like once again living close to her beloved cousin and best friend, Hannah. Bad changes, like a mean girl who plays tricks on her. And no change at all where Lily would most want one–Aaron Yoder sits near her in school and relentlessly teases her. Surprises are in store for Lily as she learns, with Mama and Papa’s help, to manage the ups and downs of growing up Amish.

The third of four charming novels that chronicle the gentle way of the Amish through the eyes of a young girl, A Big Year for Lily gives children ages 8-12 a fascinating glimpse into the life of the Amish—and lots of fun and laughter along the way. It combines Mary Ann Kinsinger’s real-life stories of growing up Amish and the bestselling writing of Amish fiction and nonfiction author Suzanne Woods Fisher. With charming line drawings in each book, this series captures the hearts of readers young and old.

My Opinion:

I’ve read Book 1, titled Life with Lily, that introduces us to the Lapp family and specifically Lily – who is a child who is in love with life but still gets into the mishaps that happen to most little girls. Lily is older now and I think that adds a little more depth to this book versus what I thought about book 1 – that being said we are still reading A Big Year for Lily but even though we are only half way or more through we are all enjoying, including the 11 year old.  Life with two brothers is never easy and now that Lily is getting older she is learning that she has to be kinder in dealing with others.

This book, if the others haven’t been read, can stand alone as it’s quite easy to pick up on the other characters and all the action that has taken place in the other two.  I enjoy reading Amish fiction and with the Lily Lapp books all of my children can enjoy a book that is on their level, although may be slightly below my oldest daughter’s level, but she still seems to be enjoying the story as I read it aloud.  Based on Mary Ann Kinsinger’s life as an Amish child the stories take on a real life feel and the beautiful illustrations that come along through the book are interspersed enough to keep everyone’s attention.

If you’re looking for a delightful book, either to read aloud to your family or to be able to know you’re giving your child a book that you won’t have to worry over it’s content then this is it, it’s safe, Christian and also entertaining – which all make for a great book.  I also enjoy knowing that there is the website I mentioned above which corresponds to the book with fun games like crossword puzzles and coloring pages as well as ask Lily a question and more!
