B&B Media Review: In Golden Splendor by Michael K. Reynolds #grow4christ

on August 9, 2013

About the Book:  Irish immigrant Seamus Hanley is a lost soul, haunted by his past as a U.S. Army deserter and living alone in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains in 1849. But after witnessing a deadly stage coach crash, he finds purpose in the scattered wreckage — a letter with a picture of a beautiful and captivating woman named Ashlyn living in San Francisco at the height of the Gold Rush. Moved by her written plea for help, he abandons all and sets out on an epic journey across the wild and picturesque American frontier. While being pursued by those who want to hang him, Seamus encounters fascinating characters including a young Pauite Indian who makes the ultimate sacrifice in helping Seamus to cross the snowy Yosemite Valley.

Battered but changed for the better, Seamus reaches San Francisco on Christmas Eve as the city burns in the tragic fire of 1849. But there is little time for rest, as an even greater, more harrowing adventure involving Ashlyn is about to begin.

My Opinion:

Where do I begin with this book?  It was truly a delight for this Christian fiction and history fan – having not read Flight of the Earls I was not properly introduced to Seamus or his family, but that did not deter me from becoming quickly engaged in this larger than usual book at 352 pages, to sit and read a book this large is a luxury for me.  Thankfully, it was my birthday yesterday so my children and husband indulged my reading fixation and I was able to finish this book and am so glad that I was able to do so or I don’t think I could handle the suspense!  The book begins in 1943 in Ireland as Seamus tells a story to his brother and we catch a glimpse of his alcoholic father and then quickly we are thrust into America with Seamus tracking an animal he’s hunting.

Next thing we know, we are swept up with Seamus as he crosses to the West and meets up with much trouble along the way, if I was reading anything other than this, I would have thought all the trouble he encountered was too much for one man and one character however with Michael’s writing style, it seems all too real.  Meeting up with Winn and an Indian guide, being chased by Native Americans, hung from a boat’s mast….well I won’t give away the whole story, but if you enjoy a bit of mystery and intrigue with strong Christian themes and values then you’ll want to grab this book, because it has all that and more!

I know I’m going to be trying to get my hands on book 1 – and I can’t wait for book 3 in January!  That said you don’t need to read book 1 in order to read book 2 first, while we don’t truly know the Hanley family from book 1 it’s easy to figure out who is who and what Seamus is running from in this book.  I honestly must say if you are looking for a great read to finish off your summer with a bang or just need something ‘different’ then check out In Golden Splendor I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
