Crew Review: Family Hope Center; Undestanding Child Brain Development #hsreviews #grow4christ

on August 21, 2013

Do you have a child with a developmental delay or special needs?  Then please read my review of the DVD, Understanding Child Brain Development from The Family Hope Center.  Family Hope Center was started because it’s founders believed that every child was unique and as such they should be treated as unique and they wanted to give parents the tools to help their children.  Most professionals feel it’s their duty to ‘cure’ the child and the parent is only a side thought, inconsequential to the child’s development but that is not the case at The Family Hope Center.

While I don’t personally have a special needs child, I do like to know how the brain works and why my child has certain quirks and that is why this DVD is so great for parents of any child, no matter if they have a special need or delay or not.  This DVD, while at first glance seems a bit boring, it is done with some humor and is done so that even the lay person can come closer to understand how the child’s brain works through their development.  Matthew and Carol Newell, the Director and Vice Director of  The Family Hope Center lead the DVD as you learn what they’ve gleaned from their years of experience.

A short description of the DVD is “Consider the who, what, when, where, why and how of your child’s total development, the critical role you play in it, and what you can do to help your children be the best they can be.”  It does a great job, I’m actually going to be recommending that my husband watch it as he and his co-workers deal with the mentally handicapped in our area and I think this would be a great resource for him.  What I appreciated about the presentation is that the child is seen as a whole child – not as a diagnosis, or as a part, or as an illness but as a whole child and they are treated as such.

Brain development has always been interesting with the history of Alzheimer’s, dementia and mental illness and I also come from a long line of medical professionals and have a degree in Social Work which depending on the area deals a lot with the brain.  So this DVD was something I could really get into and understand but as I said it’s great for the lay person or the parent who wants to feel connected to their child instead of just an interloper in their treatment.  I truly think this DVD can be a big help to the parents whose child has a diagnosis or even to the one who is trying to figure out why their child must have everything just so or just one who wants to understand a bit more about brain development.

If you’d like to order the DVD, please call 610-397-1737 or you can order Understanding Child Brain Development from IEW.  It is $19.00 and very much worth that price if you desire to learn more about how your child’s and other children’s brains work and better understand them as a whole person.  The Family Hope Center also offers a program called The Thriving Child, which looks great and provides over 16 hours of instruction on helping your child thrive.  If you’d like to see what other homeschool parents thought about Understanding Child Brain Development please visit the Schoolhouse Review Crew blog.
