Sonrise Stable: Clothed With Thunder

This is Book 3 in a Series of 4.

After sitting through a 4-H demonstration on the evolution of the horse, Rosie and Carrie are determined to present the arguments for creation at the club’s next meeting. The demonstration proves harder to put together than they imagined as everyone offers the girls their opinions. The lessons Rosie learns about creation extend into her life in surprising ways as she faces her old adversary, Billy King, who cheated her out of her first trophy with her pony, Scamper.

About Vicki Watson:

My love of horses began when a teenage neighbor offered me my first ride, on the back of her horse. From my 8-year-old perspective, it seemed like the biggest horse in the world. From that moment on, I was addicted. Horses were to become a very important part of my life, although I never could have imagined, at the time, how much God would teach me about Himself and my relationship to Him through these wonderful animals.

The Sonrise Stable series combines my love of God and horses in stories that I hope will help children learn more about both. I have a vision for ten initial books in the series, taking the main characters through one year. Beyond that I’ll see where God leads me.

I have been blessed with three daughters and homeschooled each of them through high school. I enjoy trail riding my Rocky Mountain mare, Nikki, hiking, photography, and playing guitar. I work from home as a and computer programmer and enjoy the variety and flexibility that allows.

My Opinion:

I had the chance to review book 2, Carrie and Bandit, earlier this year and even though we jumped into the series without reading the first book it was a big hit both with my girls and my son.  So when I had the chance to receive the 3rd book Sonrise Stable: Clothed With Thunder I knew I had to grab it and share it with my children as well.  As the description says it begins with both girls, Rosie and Carrie, sitting through a fellow 4-Her’s demonstration of the evolution of the horse – and it doesn’t sit well with either of them because they know that evolution is not a fact and so they set out to do their own demonstration in defense of Creationism.  Since both girls are homeschooled they are able to spend quite a bit of time in their research in proving to their group that the horse didn’t evolve over millions of years but instead was created by a Creator – however I won’t give too many spoilers for you in how things turn out.

I actually enjoyed this one more than the second one we read, maybe because it seemed more ‘real’ in the fact that the girls weren’t doing book work and were learning from real life and the fact that discussions seemed more natural between the characters.  I loved too that the book gave facts instead of just conjecture or opinions – one thing I’m learning is that we all have opinions but if those opinions aren’t based on Scripture then a Christian’s arguments will fall flat.  While this was a ‘fun’ book it was quite educational as well as with the overarching theme of anger and forgiveness.

At the end of the book is a simple run down of the anatomical features that proves there had to be a Creator in the designing of the horse versus evolution.  There is also another resource mentioned called eQuest For Truth which is a site dedicated to Apologetics for the Equine Enthusiast – and it’s filled with tons of information that go along with Vicki’s book.  Since the author, the characters and I are all homeschoolers I’d like to add that this could be a wonderful spring board for a unit study on horses and even Creationism versus Evolution – children should be prepared to give a reason for their hope and that begins in Genesis.

You can even find two lapbooks to go along with the book at Currclick – Horses which is $4.50 and the Horses Lapbook Project Kit for $7.00 and you can even find some more free resources for horses at Homeschool Share.  Also be sure to visit Sonrise Stable’s store where you can purchase the books, jewelry, t-shirts and study guides.  You can purchase the book directly from Vicki by clicking on one of the above links or at Amazon.  I think this would make a great Christmas gift for any horse enthusiast in your life.
