Litfuse Publicity: Smitten Book Club by Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Diann Hunt, and Denise Hunter #grow4christ

on February 14, 2014

About the Book:

The century-old Gentlewoman’s Guide to Love and Courtship is no ordinary book club choice. But for the little book club in Smitten, Vermont, it might be their best pick yet!

The thick, leathery tome Heather pulled out of the dusty cardboard box was definitely coming home with her. Not only was The Gentlewoman’s Guide to Love and Courtship an appealing curiosity by virtue of its title; it was also written by Smitten, Vermont native Pearl Chambers, a local gentlewoman from three generations back.

Little did Heather know the repercussions this little curiosity would have on her and her friends’ romantic exploits.
When Heather and her fellow book club members begin passing the book around, their respective interpretations are unleashed on their respective love lives . . . for better or for worse. Is it a mystery? An idealist fantasy? An intimation of Jane Austen? As romantic love finds its way to each woman, the Guide proves itself both surprisingly prescient and hilariously irrelevant.

What’s more, a handwritten inscription indicates that the arcane book might hold the only extant clues leading to buried gold—exactly what one of the members needs to keep her house. How could they not go treasure hunting?

In this remarkable collaborative novel, besties Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Denise Hunter, and Diann Hunt tackle the tale of the Gentlewoman’s Guide by writing for one book club member apiece. Smitten Book Club is a hopeful, hilarious story of friendship and healing, written by friends for friends.

My Opinion:

I haven’t read the other Smitten books but I just might be trying to find them at my libraries because I so enjoyed the Smitten Book Club – a compilation of 4 books in one written by 4 gifted authors. The titles of the books within the book are Love by the Book by Colleen Coble, Shelved Under Romance by Kristin Billerbeck, A New Chapter by Diann Hunt, and Happily Ever After by Denise Hunter – and each has the author’s distinct writing style and flair and all are equally wonderful.  I was thinking of reviewing each of the ‘books’ individually but I think since all four were so good that I’m just going to go with writing the review as one book since they all tie together and while they are written by a different author they are really just one book.  I hope that makes sense.

At first I will admit I felt a bit lost as the book starts with Molly, having just lost her husband and all the town of Smitten is helping her with funeral expenses, trying to keep her house and business so she can continue to be a mom – all the while with the finding of the book Gentlewoman’s Guide to Love and Courtship, the friends are set on a treasure hunt of sorts which they hope will help Molly. The above book, isn’t really a book but simply made up for the Smitten Book Club but that has some great advice on love and courtship, although the characters feel it’s advice is dated – but there are other books mentioned in the book club that I think I’ll try to find.  The friend’s relationship is a common theme and the reader can easily tell how much their friendship means to each one, and it becomes very easy to remember who is who as the book continues on.

I think the only thing that was a distraction for me was the somewhat constant reminder that so and so had great pecs or that so and so had great pants that showed off their great legs.  There is romance so I expected some attractions but it seemed that maybe too much time was given to the descriptions of the characters love interest in each mini-book so I tried to skim over those parts because I just wasn’t interested.  One thing I look at now, when I read a book, is can I give it my oldest daughter who is 12 and I would not give her this book until she is much older and preferably married.  Even though I say all that, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and want to read the other two books in the series, the faith of the characters showed brightly on the pages and their friendship stood the test of time and so it’s a great book for an adult woman.
