My Opinion:

Having never read any of Ronie Kendig’s books before I wasn’t sure what to expect except that I knew it was military oriented and set in Afghanistan – so I began the book and while I don’t think I got fully engrossed until the middle of the book – it was a good read right from the beginning. When 10 military super-secret computers go missing Captain Dean Watters and his Special Forces team go after those who are involved but not before becoming entangled in Zahrah Zarrick’s life as an American Afghan Christian missionary after the school she teaches at is bombed and one of her favorite students is pulled from the rubble. The first half of the book is spent setting the scene for the relationship between Zahrah and her family who are Muslim, the Special Forces team and the realization that someone is after her. Her father a retired General wants her back stateside as does Dean but she doesn’t listen and undergoes horrific things at the hands of a group of Taliban.

Fast forward a few chapters and the action picks up and had me flipping the pages long after I should have been in bed, asleep, and the action keeps up through the end where it ends in a cliff hanger and leaves you ….. hanging. There was great character development and part of me thinks that may be why the first part of the book wasn’t as exciting as it could have been had the characters been shallow. I liked seeing Dean struggle with his faith in a God he knows is there but who can’t be there physically to protect Zahrah and the other Afghan citizens from the evil that constant lurks – as I know there are many Christians in the Armed Forces and I think showing the struggles Dean has with his Faith versus himself is a very real aspect of life in the military.

I also appreciated the sub story of Todd and Amy, one of the team, he must go home as his wife only has weeks to live from the cancer that is invading her body – but his Faith is very real and strong and he talks to Dean about his struggles with his doubts of God. This part of the book put a part of military life we rarely think about, those serving have families at home that are very much loved and cared for and they have to sometimes try to shove that down and chose which part of their life they are going to live – family person or military. Todd wants to stay with his team and help them but he knows this is the last time he’ll be with his wife and so returns to her side, knowing the military will be there when he gets back. Overall, a good book, and of a genre I wouldn’t usually read so I’m glad I took the time to read it and give my thoughts to you and if I were still in the military myself it would probably be even more enjoyable.
