It’s the Last Thing She Expects to Find
Sally Bingham needs some time away to sort through the changes in her life and to rethink her upcoming marriage. Despite her ailing father’s hesitations, she takes off for a bed and breakfast in Lancaster County for a weekend away. But her best-laid plans leave her in a near collision with a bishop’s buggy and in the home of a mysterious Amish woman named Lizzie. Lizzie introduces her to a different perspective on life, a charming farmhand named Armin— and opens a Pandora’s box that will forever change Sally’s life.

This is the third and final book in the Legacy of Lancaster series by Kate Lloyd and I’ve also read Pennsylvania Patchwork, which is the second book but have not had the pleasure of reading the first so I’ll have to find that one and read it. I will admit that since it had been awhile since I read book #2 and I’ve read so many books in the interim I had to re-sort the characters out which wasn’t as hard to do this time as the ones introduced in books 1 and 2 didn’t appear nearly as much in book 3. This book swept me up right away into the story of Sally Bingham who is unfortunately engaged to a man who does not want her to pursue her own interests, such as making her get rid of her dog upon their marriage and other controlling aspects – I didn’t like Donald from the go, too hoity-toity (so glad someone else uses that term!). Definitely not your typical Amish fiction book as Sally is as Englisch as they come – working on her dad’s used car lot, having a dog breeding business, showing dogs, technologically efficient and independent – never in her wildest dreams would Sally think she’d run into the Grandparents, Aunts and Cousins she didn’t even know existed – until she takes a trip to Lancaster.
I figured out right away what would happen – one or both parents had been Amish – but I don’t want to give too much away because this is truly a book one wants to savor and read from the first page until your turning the last page late into the night. None of the reservations I had about book 2 arose in this book, so I was very thankful for that, and Sally and Armin’s story is beautiful. Some things seemed a little to good to be true at the beginning but as I continued to read more and more made sense and one can recognize that even in our own lives how God work’s in ways we would never be able to dream up – all of the pieces fall into place although Sally struggles to understand why she should worship a God who lets so much heart ache and loss happen, and as she struggles with this He pursues her. As I said I won’t give away too many details but this book was wonderfully written and I’m hoping that maybe Kate Lloyd will have a spin off series so that we can read more about Sally, her dad and Armin and even flighty, scheming Lizzie.
