Litfuse Publicity: The Brickmaker’s Bride (Refined by Love) by Judith Miller

on November 1, 2014

About the Book:

The Brickmaker’s Bride Bestselling Author Judith Miller Debuts Historical Series Set in West Virginia Yearning for a fresh start, Ewan McKay travels with his aunt and uncle from northern Scotland to West Virginia, promising to trade his skills in the clay business for financial assistance from his uncle Hugh. Hugh purchases a brickmaking operation from a Civil War widow and her daughter, but it’s Ewan who gets the business up and running again. Ewan seeks help from Laura, the former owner’s daughter, and he feels a connection with her, but she’s being courted by another man–a lawyer with far more social clout and money than Ewan. Besides, Ewan has resolved he’ll focus on making the brickmaking operation enough of a success that he can become a partner in the business and be able to afford to bring his sisters over from Scotland. But when Hugh signs a bad business deal, all Ewan’s hard work may come to naught. As his plans begin to crumble, Laura reveals something surprising. She and her mother may have a way to save the brickworks, and in turn Ewan may have another shot at winning Laura’s heart.

My Opinion:

I’ve read other books by Judith Miller before and have enjoyed them very much so it came as no surprise to me when I read The Brickmaker’s Bride and also enjoyed it as well.  Set in the reconstruction period after the Civil War and in the new state of West Virginia I knew the book would be right up my alley – as I devour books that are set in and around that time period – from the first page I was literally hooked.  Ewan’s Uncle Hugh’s wife drove me nuts though, and the family constantly making excuses for her deplorable behavior did leave me with a feeling that, if she were real, I would turn her out of my house – society rules or not!  There were some parts that described the brick making business in some detail and honestly while I found it somewhat boring (I really have no desire to learn how bricks are made) I now realize how much work went into and maybe still does, in making bricks and appreciate old brick homes all the more.

This was a great historical fiction book – with characters struggling to make decisions on what God would want and some coming to a new faith or even restoring their faith in the Lord.  I was so hoping to see Margaret put aside her bad ways, accept her sister Kathleen even after her indiscretion but alas I guess every story needs someone to be bad to the core but maybe she’ll turn over a new leaf in the next book?  I can say that this book would appeal to a wide range of audiences such as those who enjoy the Civil War time period, those who like Christian fiction or just those looking for something engaging to read – definitely a book worth reading when one has some downtime.
