gMovies can be subscribed to by going to the website.

My Opinion:

Tired of other streaming companies and having to search through less than child friendly titles and images?  I think I may have your answer.  gMovies!  That’s right, gMovies.  The streaming network operated by UP – so you’ll know there won’t be any alternative lifestyle images or adult movies coming across the line ups that your child can see.  These movies are all uplifting, inspirational movies to inspire us in our faith and walk with Christ.  With several genres such as adventure, kids, Bible movies, comedy (did someone say, David A.R. White?), thrillers, and more there is something for the whole family to watch and not feel as if they are compromising their faith.  What I really enjoyed about this is I can search for a favorite Christian actor, like above, my family enjoys David A.R. White’s acting so I can search for a specific actor which helps narrow the field.

One drawback to watching is that there is no app for it on the Roku or channel on the Wii so you’re left watching on your P.C., tablet, laptop or mobile device.  I don’t like watching on the desktop as my children can’t watch with me which is the same with the laptop – so I’m usually left just watching something that appeals to me and I watch alone on my tablet.  Maybe one day they’ll create an app for the Roku or a channel for the Wii.  Overall, though I enjoy having these movies at my fingertips since I don’t have to worry about what my children will see when they access the site.  Streaming speed is good, we have high speed, and it took a couple minutes for the movie to start but once it got going it stayed streaming until the end. It’s also quite affordable at only $4.99 a month, it’s priced to compete with other streaming companies.

FlyBy Promotions: Susie’s Hope DVD (and giveaway)

About the movie:

Based on the true story that successfully passed Susie’s Law in North Carolina, which seeks stricter punishment for animal abusers, Susie’s Hope brings to life the inspirational relationship between pit bull attack survivor Donna Lawrence and Susie, a pit bull-mix puppy found beaten, burned and left for dead. Recognizing reflect and abuse were to blame for the tragic attack that nearly claimed her life 10 months earlier, Donna resumes the battered animal and accepts her as family. Together, they learn to heal, love and forgive as they lead a historic effort to seek justice and protection, not only for Susie, but all animals. Starring Emmanuelle Vaguer (40 Days and 40 Nights), Burgess Jenkins (Remember The Titans) and Andrea Powell (Ender’s Game, The Twighlight: Breaking Dawn Saga: Part 2), Susie’s Hope is an incredible story of love, loss and redemption.

You can purchase your own copy on Amazon.

About Susie:

Susie was found nearly dead in Greenfield Park in Greensboro, North Carolina on August 20, 2009. Just a puppy, Susie had licked the face of her owner’s newborn baby. Her owner became violent—she was beaten so severely her jaw was broken. That wasn’t enough, though. She was then set on fire and left for dead. Incredibly and against all odds Susie survived. Donna Lawrence adopted her two months later. Susie is now a trained therapy dog and event won the American Humane Association’s American Hero Dog this year!

My Opinion:

My family loves animals so when I had the chance to receive this movie and my oldest was like, yes, I want to watch it I knew I’d like to review it.  That said, this is a great movie although it’s quite a tear-jerking movie so make sure you have tissues ready and if you have extra sensitive children then maybe watching first yourself would be a good idea.  The whole family watched this movie, including my almost 13 year old, 10 year old very sensitive child and 8 year old – we were pulled into the story as two friends know of a dog who is suspected of being abused.  One night, the friends go to check on the dog and find him left without food and out of reach of his empty water bowl – the dog appears friendly so Donna returns the next morning to give the dog more water and food.  Unfortunately, something has conditioned the dog at the sight of a water hose and he attacks Donna – this scene showed ‘blood’ and did show the dog bite Donna’s leg, she then stumbles down the street where her friend finds her and rushes her to the hospital.

I’m not going to give away the whole movie, I will say there are moments of heartbreak because of the dog attack Donna suffers massive injuries and complications, her husband blames her friend and becomes angry at everything.  When Donna and her friend find Susie her husband doesn’t understand why she’d want to help a pit bull mix in it’s healing.  There is also one brief scene where the husband and his friend is in the bar and shows them taking a sip of beer, I know I have some readers who would appreciate knowing that.  My children handled the whole movie very well, of course they can’t believe that there are people who would do what was done to Susie out there, even after the dogs we took in killed our guinea pigs, we did not beat them or abuse them.  We all enjoyed the outcome which was stricter laws in North Carolina in regards to animal neglect and abuse and Susie’s abuser was given jail time for his acts of cruelty but only because Susie was regarded as another person’s property.  Overall, a great movie and one we’ll more than likely watch a few more times when we need a heart tugging movie that also makes one feel good and want to help out.

FlyBy Promotions: Lumo Project The Gospel of John

About the film:

FOUR GOSPELS. FOUR FILMS. ONE JESUS STORY. FOR EVERYONE.

A ground breaking, multi-language biblical film resource transforming the way we discover, study and engage with the life of Jesus through the four New Testament Gospels.

The Lumo Project is a ground breaking, multi-language biblical film resource transforming the way we discover, study and engage with the life of Jesus through the four New Testament Gospels: redefining the standard of visual Biblical media. The Lumo Project presents four films – one for each Gospel account – that will revolutionise the way we all experience the story of Jesus and the world of First Century Palestine in which he lived.

THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

The Gospel of John takes the story of Jesus from John’s gospel with its own unique characteristics. For John, Jesus is the Word of God made human. John is clear that that when encounter Jesus, we encounter God.  The gospel writer points to the miracles (the ‘Signs’) and teachings as evidence of Jesus’ special relationship as the divine Son of God.

This full-length feature film about the life of Jesus takes the actual Gospel text as its script, word for word, unedited. Five years in the making, this epic production has been critically acclaimed by leading religious scholars as a unique and highly authentic telling of the Jesus story. Narrated by leading British actor David Harewood (‘Homeland’, ‘Blood Diamond’, ‘Merchant of Venice’) it is based on the latest theological, historical and archaeological research. With specially constructed sets and the extraordinarily authentic villages and countryside of rural Morocco, it immerses the viewer in the world of first century Palestine.

My Opinion:

The Lumo Project is onto something and it’s something great – bringing the Bible to life using the Bible and historic areas in Morocco to make it real as could possibly be.  Even though when I accepted this review I knew that the Bible was going to be used as the text and used word for word, I still wasn’t prepared for what I was going to see and hear as I began watching this film.  I could follow along in my own Bible or just chose to watch – I did follow along at some points just to make sure because I’m a bit OCD like that!  I can assure you that the NIV Bible I used and the narrator were word for word correct, I can’t wait to watch the King James Version as well.  Even my children, were wanting to watch but it was their bed time so I promised them we’d find it on Netflix to watch so we can all enjoy it.

I got the feeling of actually being there as John recounts the story of Christ in his own words – be there at the Wedding in Cana as Jesus changes the water into wine, be there as He calls His disciples, and continue on the journey all the way to the not so very end – I say that because it’s not the end, is it – until we get to our Heavenly reward.  What I appreciated as well was that the actors playing the parts weren’t drop-dead gorgeous celebrities, they were regular people and what I can envision Jesus, His family, His disciples, the Pharisee looking like back in that time.  The actors do speak but the narrator blocks their voices out except at a few moments where some of the actors languages break through, which makes for great symbolism and I liked it.  I will be urging others to watch The Gospel of John on Netflix and you can chose the KJV or the NIV which makes it great for those who want a more traditional sounding narration or a more modern English sounding one.

Please check out the Lumo Project on social media: Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.  Also, please watch on Netflix – let’s keep this streaming!

FlyBy Promotions: Awaken Love The Song by Kyle and DesiRae Idleman (and giveaway)

About the Book:

The Song Couple’s Devotional is a 6-week book for couples that can help awaken love in their marriage. With daily relationship insights and prayer points drawn from the Song of Solomon, this devotional will help couples grow in their relationship with God and one another.

Inspired by the Song of Solomon, The Song is both a full-length movie and resource for churches to explore God’s plan for relationships, love and marriage.

You can purchase a copy of this devotional on Amazon.

About the Author:

Kyle Idleman is the Teaching Pastor at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky, the fourth-largest church in America. Author of the award-winning and bestselling book, not a fan., and presenter of eight of City on a Hill’s curriculum series, he regularly speaks at conferences and events around the world. Kyle and his wife DesiRae have four children.

My Opinion:

Having been married for almost 14 years, I know that marriage is work – my parents divorced after I was an adult but even with that I was left with some issues on what marriage should be.  That said, my marriage isn’t perfect and I would never pretend it was or is but I must say that this devotional is great for those newly married and those, like me, who’ve been married for quite awhile.  Kyle doesn’t give easy platitudes and he doesn’t make divorce even sound like a remote possibility, instead he wants your marriage to succeed and be stronger and be centered on the Lord.  It’s six short weeks, 5 days each week, are spent doing a little bit of reading and then there is some homework or “the bridge” which are things that you and your spouse are to be working on, it might be something as simple as talking through something you need to change or more ‘fun’ homework.

The readings are short and could easily be done in the mornings if you get up a tad bit earlier or read it on your time through the day and discuss in the evening once the children are bed.  However, you do it, this devotional is big on making your marriage stronger, and each marriage can always use some work.  Kyle even touches on the whole controversial ‘submission’ thing.  Using the Song of Solomon, which ironically my husband and I were just discussing this past Sunday Kyle shows couples how a marriage is supposed to be based on God’s Word and not society’s.  This is one that you’ll want to do between just your spouse and yourself, the discussions are really family friendly, unless you want to talk in code – who knows maybe that is something that will put a spark in the marriage.  I appreciate the frank way Kyle writes but also the comedic breaks that are scattered through out, so while you’re being convicted you can also laugh!  This is one devotional that I’m hoping my hubby will like to go through with me.

FlyBy Promotions: Manic Drive VIP CD (and giveaway)

About the Album/Group:

Manic Drive has been widely known as a Canadian band who always delivers a great show, but over the past few years and project releases, they have added to their extensive touring of Canadian and US markets multiple Billboard Top 10 & 20 singles on CHR & Christian Rock Radio. Manic Drive is clearly very intentional about reaching their generation and inspiring them to pursue a deeper walk with Christ and to get involved in changing the world they are inheriting. And they are uniquely equipped to do so. The band members, all in their early-mid twenties, have made sacrifices to pursue God’s call on their lives. Their life experience, spiritual maturity and ministry have opened doors to speak into the lives of their own generation and that is perhaps the most defining characteristic of this group of guys.

My Opinion:

I’ve never heard of Manic Drive until I was contacted to review their newest CD titled VIP – and so I was bit cautious at first as I must admit that I’m very picky about how the music sounds as well as the voices that sing the lyrics.  At first glance Manic Drive looks quite the boy band – with the hair and hip clothing, a little reminiscent of my time as a fan of another boy band from the late 80’s early 90’s (we won’t mention the band here, but they weren’t Christian).  However, as on who does enjoy listening to a variety of music styles from classical to country to even Irish I must admit to find myself signing along after one listening and wanting to get up and praise and worship the Lord (although it’s quite hard to do when driving a car).  My husband though didn’t care for it, he did think almost all the songs sounded to teeny-bopper like and so he quit listening, my children seemed to enjoy it – not every song but most and some were great for dancing to.

Overall, I like the sound even if it was maybe too young for this mom of three but I liked the lyrics and it’s something we can use when we need to get our praise on in the house or in the car.  It gets us moving and sometimes dance can be the best form or praise and worship if you lack the words needed at the time.  I’m not fond of their look – it’s a bit too young for my tastes but I know that is what young adults will see and hopefully if they love the Lord they’ll look towards the music and if they don’t then maybe the look will draw those to the Lord.  I think I will see if I can find their other album at the library, if not maybe I’ll be asking for them for Christmas!

FlyBy Promotions: Dolphin Tale 2 curricula

About the movie:

Inspired by true events, Dolphin Tale 2 continues the story of the brave dolphin Winter, whose miraculous rescue and recovery—thanks to a groundbreaking prosthetic tail—made her a symbol of hope and perseverance to people around the world and inspired the 2011 family hit movie “Dolphin Tale.” This film reunites the entire main cast, led by Harry Connick Jr., Oscar winner Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson, and of course, the remarkable dolphin Winter as herself. Champion surfer Bethany Hamilton, who has been an example of courage, also appears in the film.

It has been several years since young Sawyer Nelson and the dedicated team at the Clearwater Marine Hospital, headed by Dr. Clay Haskett, rescued Winter. With the help of Dr. Cameron McCarthy, who developed a unique prosthetic tail for the injured dolphin, they were able to save her life. Yet their fight is not over. Winter’s surrogate mother, the very elderly dolphin Panama, has passed away, leaving Winter without the only pool mate she has ever known. However, the loss of Panama may have greater repercussions for Winter, who, according to USDA regulations, cannot be housed alone, as dolphins’ social behavior requires them to be paired with other dolphins. Time is running out to find a companion for her before the team at Clearwater loses their beloved Winter to another aquarium.

About Homeschool Movie Club:

Homeschool Movie Club is a fun, online community created to help homeschooling families discover new and old movies, media, & curriculum that help augment their home education. We will also have special ‘homeschool day’ discounts, giveaways, curriculum, and special screenings for homeschoolers for movies that haven’t hit theaters yet. Our mission is to create a community & resource that will help families find the right movies to use for their home education and enjoyment.

My Opinion:

Homeschool Movie Club is a free resource available to homeschoolers who desire to use recent movies in their homes and teach from them – Homeschool Movie Club makes it easy to download the curricula and watch complementary videos that pertain to the curricula.  The newest addition to the line up is Dolphin Tale 2, which comes out to theaters on September 12th, and to go along with that is a 5 lesson curricula that homeschoolers can use right now to learn about dolphins, habitats/environment, as well as life in an aquarium and more – there are even discussion questions for those who utilize Classical Conversations (of course you can use them even if you are CC members).  You must register or log-in to get access to the curricula, and don’t worry if you aren’t already a member – it is FREE and easy to sign up to begin using movies in your home school.

Each lesson has a video to watch before doing the day’s lessons – or if you’re very industrious I suppose parents could always add to what is in the lesson and make each lesson into a weeks worth of studies.  There are activities and experiments geared towards elementary and those are denoted with a dolphin and a sea turtle easily identifies the middle and high school level activities and experiments.  Suggestions are given for keeping a notebook, either a three ring one with the pages printed off being kept together or for the more creative making a lapbook of the educational experiences.  The author of this curricula is Sherri Seligson who also authors Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Marine Biology for high school.  I prefer to download the curricula and then use my ‘send to kindle’ feature which automatically sends it to my Kindle or my Kindle app to make reading easy and only print out the sheets I actually need, this also saves ink.  You could also use Dropbox, I hear this works better for those with iPad that doesn’t allow PDF documents.

FlyBy Promotions Review: The Sparkle Egg by Jill Hardie #grow4christ #ShareAMoment

About the book:
Easter is coming, and Sam loves Easter! But this year, he is upset about a lie he told his parents. Even though he apologized and they forgave him, Sam can’t shake the feeling that he is a bad kid for what he did. Meanwhile, his parents help him make a special Easter craft
called a Sparkle Egg. His mom tells him to write anything he feels sorry about or ashamed of on a piece of paper and put it inside his Sparkle Egg.

On Easter morning, when he opens his Sparkle Egg expecting a surprise, Sam finds that it is empty! His parents explain that because Jesus died and rose again, we are forgiven. Like the tomb that first Easter Day, Sam’s egg is empty—and Sam’s wrongdoing is completely forgiven. Once he accepts this forgiveness fully, Sam realizes a truth: we can sparkle and shine with God’s light when we let God’s gift of grace into our hearts. This touching story will strike a deep chord with readers of all ages, and the Sparkle Egg tradition will help readers and their families grasp the totality of God’s perfect grace.

You can purchase your copy at Ideals Publications for $13.59.

About the author:   Jill Hardie’s first book, The Sparkle Box, ignited a new Christmas tradition that helps center Christmas in the true joy of the season. Now Jill is hoping to touch lives with a new Easter tradition with The Sparkle Egg. She lives in North Canton, Ohio.

About the illustrator:  Christine Kornacki illustrated the highly acclaimed The Sparkle Box. She has a love for painting and a knack for bringing stories to life. Christine received a BFA in illustration from the University of Hartford and spends most days painting in her studio, which adjoins a charming café in New Haven, Connecticut.

My Opinion:

I read this the other night with my two youngest children and we all were caught up in the story of Sam who after getting his spelling test at school and seeing all the red marks (remember how those made us feel in school, small and insignificant?), he goes home only to lie to his mom.  While my children can’t relate to the school setting or the red marks – they can relate to the fleshly desire to lie to me in order to get out of trouble, which of course once the lie is found out always results in more trouble.  Sam struggles with his feelings of guilt and shame even after his parents find out and forgive him – isn’t that the way with us, even as adults, we know we’ve sinned, we know God has forgiven and yet we still feel that shame and guilt.  This book has a message for both the children and the adults who read it and I even want to make my own sparkle egg, if only as a reminder that God has and will forgive me as I repent of my sins.

Only 32 pages this book is a short read with a big message – including what Easter is all about – whether you celebrate Easter or prefer to call it Resurrection Sunday this book will hit home with the message of Christ dying on the cross for us to forgive us and to honor Him we should not hang onto the guilt and shame that He has already taken.  Of course, adults will realize that Satan is the deceiver and he is the one continuing to make us feel shameful but children aren’t always in tune to that and knowing that God has forgiven them goes a long way in teaching them what is the basic of knowing the Gospel and eventually they’ll get the rest of the plan.  Beautiful illustrations bring home the story with it’s bright colors and realistic images – my 9 year old daughter kept exclaiming she couldn’t believe how real the pictures looked!  We are going to be making our own sparkle eggs as part of our Resurrection Sunday activities and we’ll empty our eggs in honor of the Lord who forgives all if we only ask.

Dr. Chapman holds BA and MA degrees in anthropology from Wheaton College and Wake Forest University, respectively, MRE and PhD degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and has completed postgraduate work at the University of North Carolina and Duke University.

My Opinion:

I’ve had the pleasure of reading other of Gary Chapman books, such as The Five Love Languages of Children, and more – do a quick search of my blog for his name and more will pop up – and am always finding things to put to use in real life.  This book The Marriage You’ve Always Wanted is no different – useful ideas to put into work in your marriage to make it better, because lets face it, most of our marriages can use work.  At 143 pages this book is a quick read and just in time if you celebrate Valentines Day (we don’t) and only 9 chapters if you don’t read the introduction, epilogue, notes, and resources.  One thing the Lord gave us all was the ability to get married, but not everyone today feels it’s the till death do us part that it was made to be and there in lies the issue, we decide we’re no longer in love so it’s time for a divorce.

What if, you discovered love isn’t all about how you feel but rather how you live?  Gary addresses the issue, “well my spouse doesn’t want to change – they still ignore me, aren’t a Christian, etc” and says that while this is hard it isn’t us who need to change our spouses, only the Lord can do that – we have to make the decision to let the Lord change us, we are the only ones we can be resposnible for.  Is it fun or wonderful to live in a one sided marriage?  No.  However, Gary wants both spouses to read this book and partake together in the learning and growing both as people, as spouses and in the marriage that God so wants to bless.

Gary Chapman addresses why people marry – it’s way different from what the world thinks marriage is for, why spouses/people don’t change, what is love, listening, role divisions, making decisions, marital relations, how to leave and still honor parents as well as money.  I think the only thing I disagreed on in the whole book was his take on birth control and concern of overpopulation, but I don’t want to toss the whole book because of one area – the rest of the book has very valuable ideas and helps including the “Your Turn” at the end of each chapter which will allow spouses to see where their expectations are and how they can change them. Overall, this is a valuable book – whether you’re newlyweds, veterans or on the brink of divorce but want to restore your marriage, this book has something for everyone!

FlyBy Promotions Review: The Nativity Story App #grow4christ

About the App:

Where will baby Jesus be born? At the market? At a restaurant? At the inn? Readers of this book app can follow Joseph and Mary on their search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. Along the way they encounter a variety of colorful local people and animals. This is a fun and engaging way to share the original story of Christmas with the young generation and remind them what Christmas is all about.

The app is geared for ages 2 to 8 year old children, but those younger or older may also enjoy it.  The features of the app are:

  • It looks like a vintage pop-up book – a nod to the past with a hint of the future with an electronic feel
  • Interactive features, children can help Mary and Joseph find a place to stay
  • Choose read by yourself or narration – narration can keep the children busy while you attend to other Christmas activities
  • Music, characters and lots of sound effects appeal to children
  • After the story ends the real Biblical account as told by Luke

The iPad version is available for $3.99 on iTunes.  And the iPod Touch version is available for $1.99 on iTunes.

My Opinion:

I love the old pop-up books from my child hood and I love to view old wood cuts so this app blended new technology with the old feel of a time gone by into one fantastic app.  The app opens with a ‘cover’ of a beautiful book with a flickering candle illumination Mary, Joseph and Jesus at which point you can chose from the English, French or Spanish version, after you chose your language click on the cover of the book which then allows you several other options such as read to me, read by myself, explore the Scriptures, as well as the app credits, other books, etc.

I tried out the read to me first, as I have both non-readers and readers in my house, the voice that did the reading was pleasant and it was easy to follow along, although highlighting the words would have been nice for those beginner readers.  I had a lot of fun making Mary, Joseph and the other characters talk, by clicking on the circles – if you don’t do them in order from left to right though their conversation doesn’t make much sense!  Even the donkey makes noises if you click on him, and by swiping over Mary and Joseph, windows, doors you can make them travel, open and talk – which was quite exciting for my three children ages 11, 9 and 7 years old.

Overall, I think this app is great in introducing children to the Christmas story and my only really issue with it is the fact that Mary more than likely didn’t give birth as soon as they arrived in Bethlehem nor did they stay in an actual barn, as we know it today.  I did appreciate that the wise men weren’t not shown in the story and it ended with the shepherds worshiping Christ and the angels praising God in the highest.  I highly recommend this app, I only had an issue one time with it staying open and the other times it ran through with no issue and my children and I have really enjoyed it and I think it’s going to continue to bring us good memories for years to come.

About the Book:

The First Christmas Night is a beautiful retelling of the birth of Jesus on that joyous night in Bethlehem so long ago. The poem begins with the arrival of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem and winds though Christ’s birth, the angels’ appearance to the shepherds, and the visit by the Wise Men. The simple, yet elegant, verses will appeal to little ones and are accompanied by the rich acrylic illustrations of Laura Jacques.

’Twas the very first Christmas when all through the town

not a creature was stirring—there was not a sound.

The moon shining bright in the heavens so high

gave the look of midday to the Bethlehem sky.

The animals were nestled in warm, cozy places

with looks of contentment on each of their faces.

My Opinion:

I’m a sucker for books surrounding the true reason why we celebrate Christmas and The First Christmas Night was one book that I couldn’t pass up!  It’s lyrical prose wraps one in a comforting story about Christ’s humble birth but who will ultimately bring Salvation to mankind for those accept His gift.  Enter the stable as Mary lays eyes on the King for the first time and like all moms counts his fingers and toes and love overwhelms her as she ponders and treasures all these things.  Even though as adults, we know that deep down Mary had to have some fears at first – what new mom doesn’t worry what will happen during birth and in rough circumstances no less?  We also know that the Wise Men didn’t arrive until Jesus was older, but regardless this will make teaching young children about that first Christmas special and illuminating the actual Biblical text of that one Child who was given from God.

The illustrations aren’t whimsical or child-like, they are quite realistic and one can imagine themselves staring into Mary, Joseph’s and Jesus’ faces as they look upon each other.  The bright star actually seems to jump from the pages and light up – which is a wonderful job from the illustrator, Christine Kernacki – that she bring that light and make it so real.  The price is $16.99 but this beautiful hard cover with dust jacket book has a price that is far beyond that – if parents can begin in teaching their children the Gift that was given us at a young age then this book is priceless and I’m happy to add it to my bookshelf for all of my children.  Even though the age range says 4 to 8 all three of my children ages 11 years and down enjoy this book and it’s illustrations.  At the end of the book the Scripture from Luke and Matthew are written out so that all the wonder of Christ’s birth can be read as it’s written in the Bible.
