Family Christian: A Reluctant Bride (An Amish of Birch Creek Novel) by Kathleen Fuller (review and giveaway)

I have read other books written by Kathleen Fuller and have always enjoyed them, this one was no different. Sadie’s story pulls you right in – from the time she was accosted when out running a business errand for her parents up until she realizes she needs to be loved and be able to love. A Reluctant Bride was a fast read for me because of it’s page turning qualities and enjoyment factors as well as the well portrayed characters that fill it’s pages.

As Sadie deals with the repercussions of a drunk driver’s negligence in killing her parents and severely injuring one of her sisters – she finds that she does need to rely on help, both from the Lord and also from those within her community – even if it means marrying a man she thinks she can’t and won’t love. As I said this is a page turner, it kept me up at night because I just had to know what was going to happen next and oh, how I felt for Sadie – in the midst of grief she must carry so much burden and I could tell early on there was something sinister about their community’s Bishop.

Through it all the characters grow and mature and are stretched in their faith as we all are in real life – it strikes to the heart of what forgiveness is and what happens when bitterness and hate does when it’s allowed to take root and grow. I don’t want to give spoilers but at the end of the book my heart was rejoicing over Sadie and Aden’s ‘happy’ ending, although there is more heart ache in store as they deal with the other issues that are going to surround them, I hope there will be another book to follow their story as they continue to grow in their marriage. Thankfully it wasn’t your typical Amish romance – and I enjoyed it for that as well – I needed a down to earth Amish fiction book and that is what I got when I received this book to review.

Family Christian: The Good, The Bad and the Grace of God by Jep and Jessica Robertson (review and giveaway)

photo good_zpsfrap80ox.jpgBefore I begin this review I want to be honest, I’ve only ever watched a couple of Duck Dynasty episodes – we don’t subscribe to cable and I don’t usually have time to watch shows. The ones I have watched my children and I really enjoy so when I had the chance from Family Christian bloggers to read and review this book I jumped at the offer. The Good, The Bad, and the Grace of God: What Honesty and Pain Taught Us about Faith, Family and Forgiveness is an awesome book on how two people that were broken, begin to heal with God’s help and become a stronger family because of it. I was pulled in from the first chapter – each chapter is either told from Jep’s or Jessica’s point of view and you’ll know before starting a new chapter whose view you’ll be reading.

It was a relatively short and quick read – sometimes humorous, sometimes I had tears in my eyes – especially during the story of Jep’s medical crisis when the family didn’t know whether he’d leave the hospital alive. I’ve been there – sitting beside my husband as we wait word about what is going on, and then later being that widow. I could feel Jessica’s worry, her fears and ultimately peace when she leaves it in God’s hands. The book is honest, more honest than I think I ever could be in regards to my past and my skeletons – because we live in a world who wants to see us as horrible, unchanged, unrepentant sinners. However, Jep and Jessica, seem to truly not care – their story isn’t for perfect people – it’s for those who have been hurt, who have pain and who want to heal like they’ve been healed – their story is told, not to recount every horrible detail or to ruminate on it all the time, but so that there story can help someone else.

Whether or not one watched Duck Dynasty, whether or not one agrees or disagrees with their Christian worldview – if you’ve been hurt, if you’re still in pain and you want a story that shows how two people, one couple, keeps on going, then read this book! I appreciated how they didn’t dwell on facts, the story was there but it wasn’t written in a woe-is-me fashion or in a way that some continue to dwell on it while making the reader think they’ve been healed – it’s real, it’s raw and it’s all God. It’s great to read about their love for each other, for their children and for the Lord, even if it makes me miss my husband – I feel even more inspired to pass on our faith to our children so I can pass on our legacy. The questions and answers segment at the end is a great way to end the book and it makes them seem even more real than watching them on T.V.

The Parents Television Council™ has twice awarded its Entertainment Seal of Approval™ to UP for being “an authentic family-friendly cable network.” UP is the only television network to be so honored.

gMovies can be subscribed to by going to the website.

My Opinion:

Tired of other streaming companies and having to search through less than child friendly titles and images?  I think I may have your answer.  gMovies!  That’s right, gMovies.  The streaming network operated by UP – so you’ll know there won’t be any alternative lifestyle images or adult movies coming across the line ups that your child can see.  These movies are all uplifting, inspirational movies to inspire us in our faith and walk with Christ.  With several genres such as adventure, kids, Bible movies, comedy (did someone say, David A.R. White?), thrillers, and more there is something for the whole family to watch and not feel as if they are compromising their faith.  What I really enjoyed about this is I can search for a favorite Christian actor, like above, my family enjoys David A.R. White’s acting so I can search for a specific actor which helps narrow the field.

One drawback to watching is that there is no app for it on the Roku or channel on the Wii so you’re left watching on your P.C., tablet, laptop or mobile device.  I don’t like watching on the desktop as my children can’t watch with me which is the same with the laptop – so I’m usually left just watching something that appeals to me and I watch alone on my tablet.  Maybe one day they’ll create an app for the Roku or a channel for the Wii.  Overall, though I enjoy having these movies at my fingertips since I don’t have to worry about what my children will see when they access the site.  Streaming speed is good, we have high speed, and it took a couple minutes for the movie to start but once it got going it stayed streaming until the end. It’s also quite affordable at only $4.99 a month, it’s priced to compete with other streaming companies.

FlyBy Promotions: Awaken Love The Song by Kyle and DesiRae Idleman (and giveaway)

About the Book:

The Song Couple’s Devotional is a 6-week book for couples that can help awaken love in their marriage. With daily relationship insights and prayer points drawn from the Song of Solomon, this devotional will help couples grow in their relationship with God and one another.

Inspired by the Song of Solomon, The Song is both a full-length movie and resource for churches to explore God’s plan for relationships, love and marriage.

You can purchase a copy of this devotional on Amazon.

About the Author:

Kyle Idleman is the Teaching Pastor at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky, the fourth-largest church in America. Author of the award-winning and bestselling book, not a fan., and presenter of eight of City on a Hill’s curriculum series, he regularly speaks at conferences and events around the world. Kyle and his wife DesiRae have four children.

My Opinion:

Having been married for almost 14 years, I know that marriage is work – my parents divorced after I was an adult but even with that I was left with some issues on what marriage should be.  That said, my marriage isn’t perfect and I would never pretend it was or is but I must say that this devotional is great for those newly married and those, like me, who’ve been married for quite awhile.  Kyle doesn’t give easy platitudes and he doesn’t make divorce even sound like a remote possibility, instead he wants your marriage to succeed and be stronger and be centered on the Lord.  It’s six short weeks, 5 days each week, are spent doing a little bit of reading and then there is some homework or “the bridge” which are things that you and your spouse are to be working on, it might be something as simple as talking through something you need to change or more ‘fun’ homework.

The readings are short and could easily be done in the mornings if you get up a tad bit earlier or read it on your time through the day and discuss in the evening once the children are bed.  However, you do it, this devotional is big on making your marriage stronger, and each marriage can always use some work.  Kyle even touches on the whole controversial ‘submission’ thing.  Using the Song of Solomon, which ironically my husband and I were just discussing this past Sunday Kyle shows couples how a marriage is supposed to be based on God’s Word and not society’s.  This is one that you’ll want to do between just your spouse and yourself, the discussions are really family friendly, unless you want to talk in code – who knows maybe that is something that will put a spark in the marriage.  I appreciate the frank way Kyle writes but also the comedic breaks that are scattered through out, so while you’re being convicted you can also laugh!  This is one devotional that I’m hoping my hubby will like to go through with me.

FlyBy Promotions: Manic Drive VIP CD (and giveaway)

About the Album/Group:

Manic Drive has been widely known as a Canadian band who always delivers a great show, but over the past few years and project releases, they have added to their extensive touring of Canadian and US markets multiple Billboard Top 10 & 20 singles on CHR & Christian Rock Radio. Manic Drive is clearly very intentional about reaching their generation and inspiring them to pursue a deeper walk with Christ and to get involved in changing the world they are inheriting. And they are uniquely equipped to do so. The band members, all in their early-mid twenties, have made sacrifices to pursue God’s call on their lives. Their life experience, spiritual maturity and ministry have opened doors to speak into the lives of their own generation and that is perhaps the most defining characteristic of this group of guys.

My Opinion:

I’ve never heard of Manic Drive until I was contacted to review their newest CD titled VIP – and so I was bit cautious at first as I must admit that I’m very picky about how the music sounds as well as the voices that sing the lyrics.  At first glance Manic Drive looks quite the boy band – with the hair and hip clothing, a little reminiscent of my time as a fan of another boy band from the late 80’s early 90’s (we won’t mention the band here, but they weren’t Christian).  However, as on who does enjoy listening to a variety of music styles from classical to country to even Irish I must admit to find myself signing along after one listening and wanting to get up and praise and worship the Lord (although it’s quite hard to do when driving a car).  My husband though didn’t care for it, he did think almost all the songs sounded to teeny-bopper like and so he quit listening, my children seemed to enjoy it – not every song but most and some were great for dancing to.

Overall, I like the sound even if it was maybe too young for this mom of three but I liked the lyrics and it’s something we can use when we need to get our praise on in the house or in the car.  It gets us moving and sometimes dance can be the best form or praise and worship if you lack the words needed at the time.  I’m not fond of their look – it’s a bit too young for my tastes but I know that is what young adults will see and hopefully if they love the Lord they’ll look towards the music and if they don’t then maybe the look will draw those to the Lord.  I think I will see if I can find their other album at the library, if not maybe I’ll be asking for them for Christmas!

My Opinion:

I had the chance to review Jan May’s other girl focused book, Isabel’s Secret, two years ago so when Jan contacted me about reading and reviewing Callie’s Contest of Courage I knew I had to accept.  Jan writes the New Millennium Girls series for girls of the ages 8 to 12 years old but if your older daughter is looking for an easy, inspiring read then she’d probably enjoy it too – I know I did but I won’t disclose my age in this review!  She desires to have books for girls who love God and want to honor Him, so her books are big on faith – if you want a book that a non-Christian could read this isn’t your book and I love that about this, I think there may be even more faith in Callie’s book than there was in Isabel’s, there simply aren’t enough Biblical girl books for girls to enjoy.  Since Callie’s dad is in the service I thought maybe we’d be dealing with the harsh reality of war and death, thankfully that wasn’t tackled in this book, but faith was – everyone had faith that Callie’s dad would come back to them.  I don’t want to give too many spoilers so I won’t divulge too much here, but this book was a great read and even had a little bit of suspense but not so much that my very sensitive 10 year old would be scared.

I was also give the 74 page literature guide to go along with Callie’s Contest of Courage – normally I feel that I just want my children to enjoy reading and so adding in more school takes away from that, however, this literature guide makes things fun and not so school-like.  Each chapter in the book is also in the study guide with literature focus questions, discussion questions and an activity (this could be writing out and memorizing a Bible verse, mapping and more).  To save on ink I’d suggest only printing what you need and either discuss all the questions including the literature focus ones out loud or on a separate sheet of paper.  There isn’t an answer key but the book is an easy read so moms and dads could easily read it to make sure they can discuss and check their child’s work.  This is a great tie-in and will make the lessons in the book come a bit more alive and understandable for children instead of just reading the book and forgetting it.

Jan also has something for boys, Spies of the Revolutionary War writing and lapbook study – although I’d think girls might be interested to especially if they are currently studying this time period or maybe know of a great grandparent who served.  The New Millennium Girls website is chock-full of extras such as other writing curricula for all ages, a homeschool resource page with links to writing contests, free writing prompts and more, so check that out and it’s free.  Also be sure to visit the bookstore where you can purchase books and curricula easily and check out Jan blog’s where she writes more on writing, homeschooling and Jesus.

The inside of Volume 8, The Light of Salvation or better yet, Take a Peek

My Opinion:

I was contacted by Green Egg Media to see if I’d like to do a review of a copy of the Power Bible, having not heard of them or the Power Bible before I went to their website and looked around and then I called my children over and asked them if they’d like me to review a copy of this Bible.  When I showed them they all three said, most definitely yes, and when I emailed Green Egg Media back to let them know I’d like to review the 1st volume they also offered me a second – so wanting to make sure I got a bit of the Old Testament and the New Testament I also asked for Volume 8.  They’ve been given the Moms Choice Award, and I can see why these are easy to read – in fact if your child struggles with reading these may help them as the words are few and are simple for ease of use and the cartoon figures make it engaging and fun, they won’t even know they’re reading!  Volume 1 is 208 pages and measures 10 by 7.3 by 0.5 inches and Volume 8 is 196 pages and measures 10 by 7.2 by 0.1 inches.  Both volumes have thick paperback covers that can withstand many openings and closings and thick pages that are meant to stand up to children using them repeatedly.

I read through both of these Bibles in a matter of just a few hours, that is how easy of area they are so while even my oldest, fast reader will enjoy them (she likes the kind of cartoon art that is used to illustrate) as will my non-reader and my not so strong reader.  There is something for everyone in this Bible – whether adult, child or child at heart – this will have you reading the Bible in a way that is easy to understand but in no way takes away or add to the original Scripture.  Children aren’t only reading the words but they are experiencing it which means they will linger over the illustrations AND the words allowing them to learn more and really feel what the Scripture means for them.  The engaging form that the Power Bible uses is really a great way to instill Biblical truths, if you can’t be reading right then like if you’re driving, then the Power Bible can occupy a child(ren) in the backseat, even if they can’t read the pictures can speak to them.

Overall, I’m very impressed with the Power Bibles I received and I hope to add the others to the collection – the Old Testament sets which are Volumes 1-6 sell for $89.90 and the New Testament set which comprise Volume 7-10 sell for $59.90 – is a great deal especially if you’re looking for something that will have a life long impression and could be a wonderful gift for a birthday, holiday or even a baptism.  These are just really awesome and all three of my children ask to read them or have me read aloud to them as they gather around to look at the pictures – I need to have a copy for each of them so they don’t fight over the copies we do have!  I’m thankful to have had the chance to read and review these because it’s rare to find a Bible like these that impart God’s Word using His Word without diluting it and making it worthless, thank you Green Egg Media for making the Power Bible available.  Be sure to check the Family Fun tab on the website for free coloring pages, verses of the week, power packs and activity pages to have even more learning fun in God’s Word.
