Master Books: Intro to Meteorology and Astronomy Parent Lesson Planner

Recently we switched science curricula for our oldest daughter who is working ahead of where she would be in school and when I received the updated Astronomy book from Master Books I knew our old Parent Lesson Planner (PLP) wouldn’t work so they kindly sent me the new PLP to go along with the new Astronomy book.  I must say that having the PLP’s make my life so much easier in planning my daughter’s work for the week and even the year!  Honestly, I don’t really have to do much except check her work and assign her a grade.

The PLP I was sent covers both books, The Weather Book and The New Astronomy Book.  Covering both books is a one year course and it’s geared for 7th to 9th grade students and they will receive a 1/2 credit for doing the work.  I like having this all laid out for me so when I go to make her a transcript I know eactly what I should give her credit wise for the work she’s been doing.  So far she’s almost at the end of the first semester or second quarter which covers The Weather Book, after Christmas she’ll be entering into the second semester which covers The New Astronomy Book.  The whole course runs a total of 36 weeks doing science 3 days a week.

The PLP includes the weekly lesson schedule – simply put the student just opens the book and the schedule tells them what they need to complete that day.  For example, Week 1 Day 48 tells the student to read the section “Lightning – words to know, questions 1-8 and activities on Weather Chapter 4: Worksheet 2 pages 41-41 LP”.  The student easily knows which book to be using with the notation of LP (Lesson Planner) or WB (Weather Book) and can easily find what they need to do as they track their progress in the due date, the check section and the grade.  I personally don’t assign a due date as my daughter is working ahead because she’s enjoying this science so much, so I let her fill in the due date as the finished date and when I check her work I fill in the grade.

Also included in the PLP are the worksheets and I happily report that if you have more than one child who is using or may be using this curricula Master Books does grant the family permission to make copies of the worksheets for your own house.  This could save you money in purchasing extra workbooks should you have a decent printer, however we don’t so I let my daughter write in her workbook.  The quizzes, tests and answer keys are also included in the PLP – while it says parent in the name, the only thing I really do with it is check her work when she’s done for the week.  Each lesson takes about 30 to 45 minutes, so in as little as an hour and a half a week the student will complete three lessons of science.  There are also suggested labs when applicable as well as activities that expound on what they’ve learned and usually involve relating the science lesson back to the Bible, which is another plus in my book.

If you’re looking for a great science curricula that is Bible based and your determined student can use this as an independent course of study leaving you free to work with your other children, as I do.  I highly recommend this course of study and there are other books that go up through high school with their corresponding Parent Lesson Planners.  You can view samples at the Master Books website as well as looking at the additional resources such as the optional labs.  There are two versions the download e-book for $8.99 and the paperback version for $10.49, so it’s easy to chose which works best for your family.

About the author:

Israel Wayne is an author and conference speaker who has a passion for defending the Christian faith and promoting a Biblical worldview. The author of Homeschooling from a Biblical Worldview and Full-Time Parenting: A Guide to Family-Based Discipleship, Israel has written a regular column for the Home School Digest and Brush Arbor Revival Quarterly magazines and is the site editor for He is a homeschool father of seven and his newest title, The Questions God Asks, is due out Spring 2014.

You can learn more about Israel and his ministry at his website, Family Renewal and connect with him on Facebook and Twitter.

My Opinion:

We ask God questions all the time, questions such as “why did so and so have to die”, “why did my house burn down”, or “why can’t I have more children” and on and on – but what if, as Israel Wayne, has done, God could question us?  What would His questions be?  Most of us are probably thinking, I don’t want to know what questions God would ask because then I’d be expected to give an answer!  Yep, coming up with an answer to God’s questions can be a scary prospect indeed.  Some may also be thinking, well how in the world can Israel Wayne think of things that God could ask, isn’t that like him playing God?  No, no it isn’t – because he isn’t answering for him and the questions that are discussed in the books are questions like Where Were You, Where is Your Brother, What Are You Doing Here, Is My Hand Too Short and more, there are in fact 19 chapters dealing with questions that God could technically ask us and then Israel goes on to give a topic such as Where Were You is Origins-Job and then Scripture to back up what he is going to begin to expound upon.

This book is a relatively fast read,  however I do urge you to take your time as you read and really think about what you’re reading – because most of the chapters have some hard hitting Scriptural back up and may even make one squirm in their chair – think of it as the Holy Spirit is convicting you.  That being said I’m in no way elevating the author, nor is he, taking his word over the Word of God – no in fact there is so much Scripture that if you’re familiar with the Bible some of it will be rote to you – other times it’s Scripture with a dose of real life interpretation.  As with anything from man, make sure to search over the Scripture and pray over what you’re reading, so that no matter who it’s from or what it’s about, you will not be lead astray.  I think my most favorite chapter is the fourth which is the one titled Where is Your Brother which is sub-headed with Relationships-Cain, I think the am I my brother’s keeper quotes to be one of the most mis-quoted Bible reference – up there with the whole don’t judge thing.

Having been dealing with family stuff lately I think that is why this one is so hard hitting for me and I like the quote, “We must, of course, recognize that we can’t control or be responsible for the actions of others.  We can direct our own thoughts and actions, however, to ensure that they reflect the heart and character of our Savior.” (location 316 of 1502; Kindle e-book)  This isn’t even about me, but also in how my children treat their siblings, and also how we treat others in the public – whether they are Brothers and Sisters in Christ or not, we should always be representing our Savior.  Even though I say chapter four is one of my favorites, if you open up the book on my Fire you’ll see many highlighted areas because all of Questions God Asks had something to do with me, with my life, and how I respond to God and glorify Him – I know I’ll be re-reading this book from time to time.

New Leaf Publishing: Six Days by Ken Ham #grow4christ

About the Book:

Today, most Bible colleges, seminaries, K-12 Christian schools, and now even parts of the homeschool movement do not accept the first eleven chapters of Genesis as literal history. They try to fit the supposed billions of years into Genesis, and some teach evolution as fact. Our churches are largely following suit.

Ken Ham, international speaker and author on biblical authority, examines how compromise starting in Genesis, particularly in regard to the six days of creation and the earth’s age, have filtered down from the Bible colleges and seminaries to pastors—and finally to parents and their children.

You may purchase your copy at Master Books, a division of New Leaf Publishing Group, for $13.99.

Find out more about Ken Ham by visiting Master Books – you can also find his website, Answers in Genesis.

My Opinion:

Once again Ken Ham has taken the scientific and church world by storm in his new book Six Days which details why the church is declining because of the absence of it’s belief in Genesis 1 through 11 being a literal, historical science text.  I’ve read other books like The Lie, which was a bit more technical than this one and I appreciated the lay man’s approach in this book because sometimes as a busy mom I need something simple and straight forward.  While at first I was worried I may be reading some of the same material given in the other books I was pleasantly surprised that there was new information and also the same information given in a way that this book could also be read by a 13 year old and understand it.

As a Christian sometimes it’s hard to know how to answers some of the questions that come from those who don’t believe in a young earth, or that Genesis is a literal historical text or even that God exists – to them saying “the Bible says so” doesn’t work as a valid argument.  If you believe, as I do that Jesus came to earth, born of a virgin, died on a cross and rose again then one must have a foundation for that belief and even if Christ, Himself pointed back to Creation as outlined in Genesis shouldn’t we also look to Genesis in it’s literal sense to understand how the world was formed without the use of evolution or a big bang?  Ken Ham does an excellent job in explaining each of the theories that are becoming popular in the church today such as the day age theory, gap theory as well as how this break down of compromise is slowly killing the church.

If you’re not sure how to answers questions from skeptics or how to refute a fellow Christian’s belief in an old earth or that God used evolution to create the world then this book is for you.  If you’re a Christian (Ken Ham reitereates that he is not saying this is a salvation issue, which so often is said of him) and believe in an old earth or that God somehow used evolution (keep in mind that means sin and death were in the world BEFORE Adam and Eve) to create the world this book may just have you re-thinking what you believe about Creation.  This book is also for those skeptics who may no longer believe or never have believed in the Lord and it may just point you back to His Light and His Salvation and of course there will be those who use this book to make all Creationist into some kind of kooks, but that’s okay because the Truth can’t be destroyed.

New Leaf Publishing: The New Answers Book 4 edited by Ken Ham (review) #grow4christ

Review of The New Answers Book 4 edited by Ken Ham @GrowingForChrist About the Book:

The Answers series has been a powerful tool in equipping believers to share and defend their faith. Now the newest book in this landmark series takes on hot button topics like climate change, ancient man, and many more. Too many people have walked away from their faith because they sought answers for what seemed a contradiction in Christian belief and scientific teaching. For those who desire a deeper walk and a thriving faith in the face of a growing cultural adversity, now find the answers to questions you have or others may use to genetic engineering, this powerful team of apologists is able to inspire you and those you know who may not yet believe.

You may purchase your copy at Master Books, a division of New Leaf Publishing Group for $14.95

Find out more about Ken Ham by visiting Master Books – you can also find his website, Answers in Genesis.

My Opinion:

“….but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.” I Peter 3:15 ESV

Sometimes it’s hard to come up with answers to the questions that my children ask me – I can say “go read your Bible” or “God says so” but often times that isn’t enough and it’s not enough of an answer to really get to the heart of the matter and give them the meat they so need and deserve.  So when I got the chance to receive The New Answers Book 4 that is edited by Ken Ham I knew I’d be able to read through and delve into some questions and their Biblical answers.  There are many contributors to this book such as Don Landis, Bodie Hodge, Dr. Tommy Mitchell, Dr. Benjamin Shaw and many, many more knowledgeable people.  Like the verse I quoted above there comes a time when Christians will be called to give a defense for our hope (our Faith) and sometimes, no matter how much we read the Bible, pray and seek godly counsel we still have no idea how to answer those who question us.

Due to that I’m so thankful that there are men and women who take the time to write thoughtful and Biblical answers to the questions that are posed to us such as was Noah’s ark really made of wood, or were cavemen as they are perceived, should there be a war between science and faith, are GMO’s wrong and more.  You might surprised by some of the answers that come from years of research as well as Scriptural basis – yes science and the Bible do align!  Some of the questions are bigger than those my children have asked, but are great for myself or my husband who have friends and family who believe differently than us and we need to give a defense without getting bent out of shape.

I recommend this book for Christians, who like me, have been asked why don’t I believe in the gap theory or the big bang or why I believe that there were dinosaurs on the Ark and that there was no death prior to Adam and Eve.  There were a couple chapters that even this college educated, home school mom found challenging because of the technicalities involved such as how big is the universe, but the other chapters and their questions were well done that most lay people can easily understand it but also those who have engineering type of minds will get a lot from reading it.  If you desire to learn more about what the Bible AND science has to say about issues in Christianity then this book will be of a huge benefit to keep on your bookshelf – as long as you read it!

My Opinion:

As always Master Books has another great resource for those who want to know or teach their children the beauty of God’s night sky using creation from the Bible and with beautiful imagery and text.  You don’t have to be an astronomer or even know all the constellations to enjoy the beauty and majesty that is the heavens of the night sky – looking up into it and seeing all the stars and the moon and even the occasional planet makes one imagination come alive.  If you’re studying astronomy, getting ready to or just have an interest in it then The Stargazer’s Guide to the Night Sky is just the resource you’ll want to have on hand, great for the beginner or the advanced ‘stargazer’.  There are twelve chapters everything from motion in the sky for basic and advanced people, celestial events to astrophotography, and more including an introduction, and afterword and an index will make this well worth the investment.

The pictures are beautiful and stunning through the whole book, I can only imagine what it would look like if I had a physical copy over the electronic format of the book.  I really enjoyed the first chapter which is the “motions in the sky – basic” because it gave me a way to use a quick method for measurements while star gazing – you know those charts that use degrees to tell you how to find a star, constellation or planet?  Using certain fingers and hand measurements will give you and idea of the degree measurements, which will not make it much easier to find those celestial events that we usually miss out on because we can’t find the correct degree.

The amount of information in this book could easily launch you or your child into an in depth study of astronomy.  Written from a creation viewpoint and distinctly Christian there won’t be things you’ll have to omit or research more information because it’s all there for you – I wish I had had this book when we studied astronomy a few years back, but now that I do I will add it back in when we study the stars again.

The Genius of Ancient Man: Evolution’s Nightmare general editor Don Landis w/Jackson Hole Bible College

The Genius of Ancient Man: Evolution’s Nightmare is another of Master Book’s publishing successes.  Don Landis, the general editor for the book in conjunction with Jackson Hole Bible College have put together a wonderful book in explaining facts about ancient man from a Biblical worldview, that some, even Christians may fail to realize or even know about.  The book is hardcovered and case bound and measures 8 1/2 by 11 inches and has 112 pages that are full of factual information and scientific process that doesn’t debunk the Bible as merely a story.  This isn’t a simple, read-through-in-a-day book this book must be relished, taking the time to read and understand it’s findings in light of Biblical historical accuracy.

Some of what you’ll read include:

  • Why structures echoing the Tower of Babel have been recreated on almost every continent and major culture
  • What artifacts and archaeology, technology and innovation really reveal about the origin of mankind
  • Why many biblical symbols (rainbows, human sacrifice, mountains, the Son/sun worship) were, and continue to be, distorted in pagan religious practices
  • What the historical record reveals about Satan’s “counterfeit” of God’s plan for humanity

I found it fascinating how well this book tied in with our current history and geography curriculum and find it fascinating to read more about the statues of Easter Island and that dragons really did roam the earth with humans (there is some speculation that there even may be some dragon-like creatures alive today, but I digress).  I love it when a book that has been researched and can prove the Bible’s truth in God’s Creation and historical accuracy as well as prove to man how Satan can turn good and perfect things into evil things.  I really enjoyed this book and it gives me a chance to delve deeper into our studies as well as giving my older children something more than milk – it gives them the meat that they’ll need to eventually stand for God’s Word in a world and even a Church that is diluting God’s Word.

Made in Heaven: Man’s Indiscriminate Stealing of God’s Amazing Design by Ray Comfort and Jeffrey Seto

About the book:

Science shamelessly steals from God’s creation, yet refuses to give God the glory!

  • How the glow of a cat’s eyes innovates road reflectors
  • The naturally sticky inspirations for Velcro and barbed wire
  • A fly’s ear, the lizard’s foot, the moth’s eye, and other natural examples are inspiring improvements and new technologies in our lives

Engineers and inventors have long examined God’s creation to understand and copy complex, proven mechanics of design in the science known as biomimicry. Much of this inspiration is increasingly drawn from amazing aspects of nature, including insects to plants to man in search of wisdom and insight. We are surrounded daily by scientific advancements that have become everyday items, simply because man is copying from God’s incredible creation, without acknowledging the Creator.

My Opinion:

It’s my pleasure to introduce you to one of the newer books published by Master Books, a division of New Leaf Publishing Group and written by Ray Comfort and Jeffrey SetoMade in Heaven is a book that is small but definitely filled with a lot of information in it’s 64 pages that makes it appear larger than it is.  A lot of this has been items that we’ve covered in our study of flying creatures this year in our science lessons and there are plants and other animals that we will learn about and we use God’s design in them for our daily lives.  One of the exciting things that I found in this book was to complement our studies of butterflies and the iridescence that some contain and what we have ‘stolen’ from the butterflies design will surprise you.

Bugs, fish, humans, and plants have something that we currently use in our lives to make them easier or to improve them – what about Velcro?  air conditioning?  healing power of our bodies?  This and more is covered in this fascinating book that will have the reader looking at God’s Creation in ways that we never considered all backed up with science and research – so it’s not just a Bible thing.  This book will be coming along side our studies in conjunction with our current science curricula because it will give us a little more in depth information, especially helpful for myself and my older children.  This is a fantastic book that will be instrumental in viewing God’s Creation in ways never thought of before.

Awesome Science: Volume 2: Explore Yellowstone with Noah Justice

I had the pleasure of reviewing Volume I in this series about the Grand Canyon and I enjoyed that one and this one is no different.  Unlike the Grand Canyon I haven’t visited Yellowstone yet, but I enjoy learning about it and this DVD is sort of like a field trip on DVD.  Using the Bible as the historical backdrop for understanding the age of the earth according to the genealogies as listed.

As in Volume I this is a great DVD if you are wanting to stay away from evolutionary view points and learn the whole truth regarding the breath taking views that our Creator gave to us through Yellowstone and it’s geysers.  In this volume you and your child(ren) will learn about:

  • The Geologic Column is best explained by the Global Flood
  • Super volcanoes were used to shape the earth after the Flood
  • The petrified forests in Yellowstone were formed in just a few years.

For $14.99 you can take yourself and your children on a field trip to Yellowstone.  I think one of the things that I enjoyed most were seeing the herds of bison feeding in an area that used to be lake during the Ice Age and the treeline was the lake edge.  It’s awe inspiring and thought provoking – learning how the true science behind the formation of these wonders aligns with the Biblical accounts of how God created the world and the global flood.

The accompanying study guide will add to the study of Yellowstone and obtaining a copy for each child is easy since the study guide themselves are only $3.99.  The 34 page study guide has plenty of areas for the child to write in their answers either while they watch the corresponding chapter on the DVD or as review.  Discussion questions can be answered aloud or an older child could record their answers on a sheet of paper.  There are also bonus activities that will allow for deeper study.

The study guide/workbook will cover:

  • About Yellowstone National Park
  • The Geysers
  • Mud Volcano
  • Old Faithful
  • Petrified Forest
  • Awesome facts about the Petrified Forest
  • and more

This is a wonderful resource that will help the family in becoming more knowledgeable in our young earth and the beautiful sites that we’ve been given through God’s Creation.  For those who believe the Bible is an accurate historical text and also provides some science in regards to the origin of the earth then this will be a must have resource to add to your home’s collection.

Awesome Science: Episode I: Explore the Grand Canyon with Noah Justice

Tired of the evolution view that some nature videos and magazines tout as fact?

Tired of “over million and million of years” the earth was formed?

Tired of having to explain to your children, again, “don’t listen to that part”?

Me too.

Enter the new DVD series from Master Books with Noah Justice who takes children and their parents on a 30 minute excursion into the Grand Canyon to show them how it can be proved the Grand Canyon was formed in a matter of just days and not millions of years.  Noah Justice explains how the 40 layers of the Grand Canyon were laid in the Biblical, worldwide flood of Noah’s day and not a long, long time ago.  Noah Justice is a 14 year old who is going to be your tour guide for the 30 minutes that you learn about the Grand Canyon from a Creationist, Biblical viewpoint.  He handles himself very well and gives in depth explanations that both adults and children will appreciate.  The DVD is $14.99 and can be purchased at the Master Books website and other locations – this is a great DVD to have on hand.

There is also an accompanying study guide that is available for $3.99 and will turn the DVD into a great unit study on the Grand Canyon.  The 34 page study guide takes you through the DVD in increments such as:

  • About the Grand Canyon
  • Evidence: Colorado River Plausibility Questions
  • Dunes
  • Receding Floodwaters
  • Example of Mars
  • and more

There are fill in the blanks, ordering, discussion questions and extended activities to have your child answer.  While copies can’t be made, the study guides are affordable or you can simply have your child record their answers orally or write them in a notebook – to save money for the family with more than one child.
